An important element of the AMU Alumni Association of Northern California is its scholarship program. About 200 needy, bright students are currently supported in the fields of, engineering, medicine, business administration, basic sciences, commerce, arts, etc. The scholarships are awarded from donations to the scholarship fund. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students regardless of their religious beliefs. There are two general categories of scholarships awarded by the Aligarh Alumni Association, Sir Syed Scholarship and Special Scholarships.
The SIR SYED SCHOLARSHIP is awarded from a scholarship fund, which in principle is a pool of small donations (generally between $5 to $1,000). Donations to this pool are accepted any time of the year, and individuals are encouraged to donate whenever possible. The terms and conditions of the Sir Syed Scholarship are determined by the Association, and are as follows. The scholarship is awarded to students at any academic level after passing high school in any area and at all levels of education. Selection of students is based on merit-cum-means. The amount of award is determined based on financial need of the student. An initial commitment is made for one year, but the recipients are given to understand that they will be supported to the highest degree level as long as they perform well, still in need of financial assistance and the funds are available at AMUAA. Any substantial financial aid from other sources precludes the award of this fellowship. The scholarship program is a long-term project supported by donations to the scholarship fund.
The SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS are instituted at the request of a donor, who can define the terms and conditions of the scholarship. This is a flexible program for those who wish to donate $5,000 or more either in lump sum or in installments, and either as an individual, group or organization. Scholarships are awarded on a merit-cum-means basis, and the awards are tailored to the specifications of the sponsors. However, relatives or friends of the sponsors are not eligible to receive these scholarships.
100% of Scholarship donations are used for scholarship purposes, without deducting any overheads or expenses.
A Scholarship Committee comprised of Dr. Hasan Tahir, Dr. Shaheer Khan, and Mrs. Humaira Khan runs the scholarship program. This committee reports to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the AMU Alumni Association, and is directly responsible for all aspects of the scholarship program.
For functional aspects of the program, the committee relies upon help from Muslim Social Uplift Society (MSUS) and other local community members. Thus, at AMU the committee seeks help from such community members as Drs. A. Rahman Kidwai, Suhail Sabir, Parvez Talib and Zia-ur Rahman. These volunteers provided help in advertising the scholarships, distributing and collecting application forms, arranging and conducting applicant interviews, and advising the Scholarship Committee on selection of deserving students for the awards. The Scholarship Committee in California makes final selections. The committee monitors annual progress, and decision to continue or discontinue the award to each individual is made in California. Checks and balances are in place to assure that 100% of the funds are utilized for the scholarships, without deducting any overheads or operating costs. The Treasurer of the Association who is elected by the general body of the Association maintains the scholarship account. When the program expands to other cities, application forms would be available through local schools, colleges, and universities.
AMUAA is thankful to Prof. Suhail Sabir (Chairman, AMU alumni affairs committee and his interview team, Provosts of various halls for their help in conducting the interviews to select the scholarship recipients.
